Rethinking Oatmeal
“Oatmeal is boring!”
It doesn’t have to be.
Oats are a great source of fiber, carbs, and protein (one cup has about 6g) and loaded with vitamins, minerals: magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, selenium, and iron. With just a few additions, you can have a tasty, nutritious breakfast you actually look forward to eating.
For us, eating oatmeal has largely been something we do to fill a need for a cheap, nutritious, quick breakfast. The base always starts with water, oats, salt and fruit. The fruit serves to add sweetness— my go-to is banana. From there, It’s easy to add in whatever you have on hand and sounds good that day. Some favorites:
Coconut flakes
Walnuts
Pecans
Dried fruits (cherries or cranberries)
Fresh fruits (blueberries, blackberries, apples, pears)
Dark Chocolate
It can be made backcountry style with hot water, in a bag (we use the stand up silicone stasher bag). We add powdered milk and bring dehydrated fruit instead of fresh and then usually add some nut butter.
